7 Questions – Nickie

The best possible introduction to Nickie is to directly quote her. This is what she says after she’s pushed to explain why she wants to see more acceptance of trans people:

Just so we skip all that bullshit, so that at 20 years old, instead of fighting for a place to live and eat and sleep, we’re fighting for a grant for school..

It’s a brilliant insight because of its brutal simplicity. TDOR is still very much on my mind today. I’ve read the list online, and I’ve argued about the exploitation of the victims, but standing outside last night and hearing the names of this year’s fallen, and the graphic details of their passings, all politics fell aside. The reality just stuns you into silence. But today, the day after, all I want to do is talk about how to make next year’s list smaller. Once again, This is HOW shows the way.

Nickie has the kind of story that is too often only told posthumously, but instead she’s here and looking for ways to give back. And, hoping she doesn’t mind my saying so, looking damn fabulous while doing so. ¬†Welcome Nickie, and check out previous entries from other folks in the TIH community, Ineda and Toni.

God, Nickie – you look spectacular! I think you look like a million bucks.

I hope you don’t continue to feel like a weight on society. I still don’t understand why you feel that way. You are a challenge to social norms. We all are. Good for us. I wish you all the best, and only wish that I could see you on the street & tell you how fantastic you look!
