7 Questions – Ashley

Part of what’s remarkable about the Miss Gender video/podcast, where Jay Frosting interviews Ashley about her transition, is how ordinary they make the process seem.  Hard issues, such as Ashley’s parents refusing to use her chosen name, hurtful slurs and when to identify as trans while looking for employment, mix freely with lighter fare such as Ashley’s giddy enthusiasm for nail polish, just as they really would in a genuine conversation between two old friends.

When trans people to talk to trans people, we develop our own language, expectations and even rules that we adhere to, and get ‘policed’ when we don’t. Ashley freely and nonchalantly discusses issues that I wouldn’t talk about with friends, much less the public, but her genuine rapport with Jay, and his rare blend of respectful curiosity & obvious big heartedness, makes for a comfortable intimacy.  Thanks to both for the first team interview submission to the 7 Questions project!

“Hi Ashley!!!!” [Jen goofily waves as if this were live.]
